Welcome new Ceramic Students!

I look forward to working with all of you!
We will begin the quarter by getting you familiar with working with clay!
We also will be having a student teacher! His name is Tom Steele!
There is a lot to show you! Get ready!!!
Please check out the blog list, and check this site regularly! We will be working on blogs and exploring artists and sites on Wednesdays. Demos will be on Monday! You are welcome to stay late on Wednesday and come in for Open Studios! Check the dry erase board in the room for times!

LAST WEEK/SEMESTER ONE ENDS

What do you need to do?

1. Photograph 6 surface exploration tiles, small cup, and 5 tumblers.
2. Print out images, and use them when writing your reflection of learning papers.
3. Review hand out on requirements for paper. Remember the paper must be typed and written in paragrah form.
4. If you were on a wheel, you are required to turn in your wheel kit cleaned. Please make sure you are checked off the kit list. Clean out your locker. Wipe down the bottom of the locker. Take the lock off. Get a piece of tape. Put your combination on the tape with a marker and put the lock inside the door of the locker. See me to check you out.
5. Turn in paper with images, with check out sheet.
6. If you are continuing on, please hold onto your wheel kit, or tools, and put a new name on the locker.

Surface Tiles/x6

Surface tiles x 6 are due by Friday! (6 tumblers with one technique are also due!)
Make sure you get the tiles to the back room to be fired.
Stamps must be fired also.
Rotation 2 will start on the wheel!
Anyone interested in Advanced Ceramics next quarter, see me ASAP!

Blog and images of all work created must be turned in for a final grade!
Ask questions before the deadline!

Surface Exploration? Lets discuss, how? What do you think?
Erin Furmisky (Recently had a show at the Plinth in Denver) Was a wheel thrower and switched to sculpture. You don't have to stay with one thing!

Surface Techniques and Soft Slab Construction











You will be exploring surface before making a set of 5 tumblers that match using the same surface technique. I will be in San Diego at a workshop on Friday and Monday. I do not show dvds just because, watch carefully, learn and we will move forward when I get back. I will be exploring surface in San Diego, so be ready when I get back!

Organic and found form moulds!


Bring in organics to put in a mould. We will be creating spriggs! Start thinking about your 30 poured moulds that will be turned into a sculpture! Next up, a two piece mould!

What is a makers mark?

You should be finished making 5 initial stamps. Please place on grey metal cart and I will fire them. You should also have 5 different symbol stamps! Place everything on the cart with a piece of paper with your name underneath when you are finished!

Everyone is doing a great job! Just keep doing what you are doing!!

This week 22-26

Since I was out Thursday and Friday last week, I am not sure exactly where everyone is on their projects.

1. Monday- Mobile lab will once again be available in the room. All blogs are due with reflection of finished work and work in progress. Remember to include images.

2. Tuesday-Throwing Demo- Students who have completed handbuilding assignments will rotate onto the wheel for 4 weeks. Handbuilders will begin work on Organic Forms.

3. Wed-Throwing Review/Set up of wheels

4- Thurs-Class is broken into two groups/ New rotation has begun!

5.Friday-Work day

Olla work begins!

We will start this project by looking at the Mata Ortiz video.
You will be making 2 Ollas. I will be textured, and the other will be burnished.
Make sure to wrap up your pots as you have been shown in class or they will dry out.
You are responsible for making your own texture tool.
Make sure you check out the websites on the board for ideas for possible shapes.

Whistles are DUE!

Whistles Due: Thursday
Two Whistles

1. Burnished- Design with lines that change into forms. Flowing form that continues throughout.
This piece will be smoked black.
2. Animal Whistle/Must have reference that you turn in with finished piece. Choice of 2 raku
glazes for this piece.

We will begin on ollas on Friday! You will be making two Ollas. One with a repeated pattern and one that is smooth.

After the Olla's are finished we will divide into two groups wheel/hand.
